Day 13 – Idylling Some More

I wake up in a bed – sheets and everything! And still dark at 8:30, given the curtains! The miracles of modern technology.

Sasha and I take our time getting out – the gents from yesterday give us their food, their beer, their leftovers. The keys to their room. And then they’re gone. We loiter til 11a –  checkout time – then simply move all our things into the $3 a night Idyllwild Campground.

We call home, talk to people – I walk to the library and write like a fiend for three hours; resupply with just $25 for the next section. There are no local postcards in this town – why are there no local postcards? – so I’ll have to send the donors to my Big City Mountaineers fundraiser something from Big Bear Lake. Third time’s the charm, right?

Back at the campground, I get into a huge philosophical discument about feminism and politics and race with Moses – the only black man I’ve seen on trail. It stretches into the evening, until the fire’s more endearing than our conversation, and we move to huddle around it.

He also tells me there’s supposed to be a 40% chance of a thunderstorm tomorrow afternoon, so Sasha and I, if we want a shot at San Jacinto, are in for an early morning – though we plan to make the call at the trail junction. We call it early and curl up, alarms set for 4am – and reassurances rolling around in my head as I close my eyes.

    Hi. MNhikingviking from Minnesota is enjoying your blog. I “did” Oregon last October (cold) and am getting back on the Trail at T. Meadows on July 21. In the meantime, Carrot Quinn told me about you blog and this is to let you know that it’s appreciated. Sort of keeps me focused while I wait for July to come around. Question: Are you doing all of your typing on a cell phone?!

        For what it’s worth, I might be able to focus all my energy towards thru hiking the PCT, or to maintaining a daily blog with quality writing, but definitely not both. Not sure how you all do it! =D
